You may remember that last year at this time Dunkin’ Donuts released their critically acclaimed hybrid Croissant Donut. It is a pastry that has the donut shape and exterior with the guts of a soft butter croissant. There was much fanfare when in February of this year Dunkin Donuts announced the Croissant Donut was becoming a permanent menu item. Inexplicably, after having them practically shoved down our gullets in gift boxes for months, they were gone. There were no articles, no press releases, and zero fanfare preceding the disappearance.
This morning on the way home from work I stopped at one of my Dunkin’ Donuts for the usual (a large French Vanilla ice coffee, extra light with cream, and 4 Splendas for those of you who have been living under a rock for the past 11 years) and saw a peculiar pastry on the top shelf in the middle. From afar, it looked like an Apple Fritter. Upon closer inspection, it looked like a glazed donut with vanilla piping and a crumb top.
I asked the guy making the coffee what it was, and he said he didn’t know. It was new. It had just come in about 10 minutes before I had. So of course being curious, I got one…
Apple Croissant Donut Snickerdoodle Croissant Donut is still glazed overall, but with the added vanilla piping and apple crumbs adorning the top. Inside is the same buttery croissant interior we knew and loved PLUS there is an apple cream filling inside that really puts the Apple Croissant Donut onto a whole new level of delight. This kind of product refresh is something I actually called for previously. Now, I’m not trying to take credit or anything… but it’s nice to know the guys at Dunkin’ Donuts a) read the blog, b) value my opinion to some degree, and c) found a flavor to work with OTHER than PUMPKIN for the fall. Seriously, had this been a Pumpkin Croissant Donut I would’ve spit it out.
Here’s the nutritional information for those of you who care about stuff like that:
Apple Croissant Donut Snickerdoodle Croissant Donut is out there in the wild. I’m not sure what the availability of it is because I haven’t read any articles, found any press releases, and I haven’t seen anything about it on the Dunkin’ Donuts blog… so chances are, you’re seeing it here first!!!
