I found this video on Business Insider in a post called Navy SEALs explain how your ego can destroy everything and really wanted to share it because I think the message applies to everyone, not just Navy SEALs and not just those in EMS…
The part that really stood out to me was what they list as the real reasons for failure:
- Not humble
- Does not accept responsibility
- Doesn’t accept a different way of doing things
- Can’t change
I bolded that last one since that was the one that jumped off the screen at me. Specifically it was the choice of using the word can’t instead of won’t.
I’m a big believer that you make your own destiny and don’t have one that is pre-determined. In order for that belief to work, you need to be able to make choices. One of those choices should be making the choice to change IF you WANT… not that you CAN’T. As someone who has chosen to change, aligning myself more with what they highlight in the video, I believe that if you really WANT it, that you can make it happen.
Even change within yourself.
I agree with everything else they say in the video. My only sticking point is their word choice in that one line. I think it’s a matter of people who WON’T change as opposed to those who CAN’T. Those are the people who will fail as leaders.
Those are the people who will fail as friends.
