For those of you who may be hiding under a rock… well the new Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens trailer was released. I’ll be honest, I have ragged and ripped incessantly on JJ Abrams for quite literally swiping the Episode IV and Episode V storylines for his reboot of the Star Trek franchise. I have maintained that I will not be holding my breath for Episode VII for this VERY reason… because I saw (and to a degree still see) nothing but trouble with Tribbles coming to Star Wars.
But I watched the trailer.
And I’ll be honest… I liked it.
Now it’s still too early to truly tell about the whole movie… but it felt like an authentic Star Wars trailer. I really thought either Soccer Ball-D2, the Millenium Falcon with it’s square satellite array (as opposed to the original circular) or the X-Wings racing just above the water would be the talk of the internet water-cooler… but apparently it’s the blazing red lightsaber with the hilt-guard.
Shows what I know about what us fanboys are going to go crazy over. To me, it’s not a big deal, even if it isn’t really functional. The fact is, it looks bad ass… and I’m pretty sure due to the coloring along with the narration that it’s in the hands of someone who will be equally bad ass. It isn’t the Darth Maul double blade, but I think it will do a good job to help define both this character and the type of ride we’re about to take… which all indications are pointing towards a brutal one.
So really… relax about the lightsaber. It’s not that serious. A lightsaber is just a tool like any other weapon… it’s what the person holding it does with it that really matters.
Honestly, I think Stephen Colbert came out with the best and intricate answer to all the criticism…
