So an interesting thing happened while checking into Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on GetGlue. I saw the image to your right in my feed multiple times. A quick search revealed this blog post where GetGlue introduces new animated stickers. I think that announcement is supposed to excite me, but for some reason I felt that it really wasn’t that great. While animated GIFs have recently made a bit of a comeback, they’re forever stapled to the 1990s with their gawdy blinking and 8-bit animation. So while the new animated stickers could be hard to replicate as a physical sticker, well they didn’t have to kill the physical stickers because of it, did they?
Sure enough, buried in the second to last paragraph:
As we open this door to a new, exciting future of stickers, it also means closing the door to our physical sticker program. We know that for many of you, this will be a bummer. But in time, we hope you’ll share our vision and excitement of things to come.
Yeah. It’s a bummer.
Because let’s be honest, what was cool about the GetGlue stickers was that you didn’t need a connected to device to show them off. They were a passive way to publicly express your adoration for the content that you checked in to and now they were no more. The worst part is that if you were waiting to get a season of, oh, I don’t know, maybe a ground breaking Agents of Shield sticker set before you put in for your next set of physical stickers… well you’re out of luck. There is no way to order or get stickers physically anymore.
I can understand why GetGlue needs to do this. What I don’t like is how and when they did it.
