EMS Week Kindle Book Deals

May 21, 2017 By Dave Konig Leave a Comment

In celebration of EMS Week 2017 I have the following e-book deals going on at Amazon:

The Pride Of The Hills: A Vollie’s Memoir

Lace up the boots with an authentic 20-year EMS volunteer in one of the world’s biggest Emergency Medical Service systems, New York City. Beginning with a bumpy start in the service, through to those teenage rebellion years as a new provider running on calls for help, and culminating to a point of maturity often never reached in an industry infamously known for eating its enthusiastic young with an astronomically high burnout rate to prove it.

Ride along to discover what it’s like to be an EMS provider, plunge head first to unlock the secrets of a misunderstood EMS system, and discover the shocking truth about who’s winning the life and death struggle that human nature declares we wage in the quest for immortality.

˃˃˃ Because You Never Know What You’re Walking Into Working In EMS

“She’s gone. No pulse, no breathing, and cold as an ice cube,” I replied while reluctantly withdrawing my hand.

Turning around and away from her, my eyes fell on the scene at the end of the basement. Along the wall were roughly a dozen men. All of them had their arms above their heads with their palms pressed against the concrete wall. Their feet were spread apart. Their heads were hung in either shame or fear. None of them were fully clothed. Some were missing their shirts, some were missing their pants, and one of them was completely naked….

˃˃˃ Because There’s No Place Like New York City

The New York City EMS system is much more complex than many people realize. It is a tiered service comprised of a variety of agencies, each with their own history and challenges trying to fulfill the Emergency Medical Services mission. Learn about both the challenges and some of the outlandish calls first hand through the eyes of one of the providers.

Price: $4.99 $0.99 only until May 27

25 Things They Should Have Taught You In Medic School… But Didn’t

Medic school is all about teaching you how to save the lives of others, right? Because that’s what the Emergency Medic Services does, right? Maybe… but there are many topics that medic school doesn’t cover, such as what about the health and well being of the medic providing the care? What kind of shifts will you work?? When will you have time for lunch??? How RICH will you be????

Upon reading this book you will have some honest answers and a new found appreciation for those who stand between you and a potentially negative outcome in times of medical and traumatic emergencies. Understanding how their lives are vastly different by answering that call for help when it comes to things such as eating lunch, getting sleep, and being with family on the holidays will have you appreciate them that much more when you need them.

Popular Chapters Include:

  • #1 Certification Doesn’t Matter, We’re All Medics
  • #8 Pack Your Lunch
  • #10 EMS Doesn’t Save Lives
  • #19 You DO Drive The Ambulance
  • #24 The Rewards Are Greater Than The Paycheck

˃˃˃ This Edition Includes BONUS: #26 Avoid Social Networking Pitfalls

Although Social Media adoption and use continues to spread like wildfire grabbing headlines on news sites around the world it is important to remember that we are still medical professionals. Time and time again we read and hear about issues with Medics using Social Media inappropriately, and this can be a career ender. This bonus chapter includes the 7 Things To Do Online That Will End Your Career and 7 Things To Do Online To Build Your Career, because not ALL Social Media is bad.

It’s 4:37 AM… Do You Know Where This Blog Post Is?

November 24, 2015 By Dave Konig Leave a Comment

It’s 4:37am… and obviously I’m not sleeping. Instead of counting sheep I’m pondering a few things I saw on the internet today and so I figured I’d share in a bullet list and of course I threw in a poll for some self-gratifying feedback…

  • Amazon Advertising of The Man In The High Castle – To advertise their original series The Man In The High Castle, the MTA took Amazon‘s money and redid some subway cars in the decorum of the Pacific States of America and the Greater Nazi Reich. People were upset by seeing the symbolism, specifically the Nazi symbols in their mass transit system. Who are they blaming? Amazon, of course. I think that blame is misplaced. I think that if you’re upset about the way the subway looks, blame the MTA who took the money and carried out the advertising order. I also find the timing somewhat poignant based on the seemingly out of control debate going on about Syrian refugees who are fleeing genocide. Maybe the symbolism fits more than we’d care to admit….
  • Calorie Burn Subway MapBurning Calories – There is a very cool map that shows how many calories you can burn by walking in between subway stops. I’ve rocked a Fitbit (currently I have a Surge strapped on) for quite awhile and honestly I find this to be a real eye opener… sort of how the calories on the menus is an eye opening experience as to how much you’re actually sucking down. When you look and see how far you have to go to burn off calories, suddenly that 2,400 calorie Whopper isn’t looking like such a good idea.
  • Scientific Study Proves What I Already Knew – Gizmodo has this great article about how Self-Proclaimed Experts Often Claim To Know More Than They Actually Do. This is coming from a study by Emily Rosenzweig and David Dunning. To me this is very fascinating, especially since you can still call yourself a Social Media Expert just by having a Twitter account. It proves to me that the more you know about something, the more you have to learn. You may recognize Dunning because he is the same Dunning from the study identifying the Dunning-Kruger effect. That showed how incompetent people often overestimated their ability while the highly skilled person underestimates their performance. I see this effect in action all the time, specifically when people think that law enforcement, fire service, or non-EMS based medical personnel can do a better job designing, staffing, and running an actual EMS operation than those who actually do it… the EMTs and Paramedics who are rendering the service.

And finally…

  • DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Has It’s First Trailer – Two of my “must” watch shows are The Flash and Arrow, both based on DC Comics and shown on the CW Network. Coming this January the newest DC based show that hits the CWwill be Legends of Tomorrow featuring Firestorm, The Atom, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Captain Cold and Heatwave, and White Canary. Honestly, it looks pretty amazing. But don’t take my word for it… see for yourself…

$0.005779 Per “Kindle Edition Normalized Pages” Read For July 2015

August 15, 2015 By Dave Konig Leave a Comment

kindle_logo-300x300Today the July 2015 KDP Earnings Report became available for those who use Kindle Direct Publishing. Up until July 2015 books enrolled in Kindle Direct Publishing Select (which grants Amazon exclusivity to the ebook) were paid for “borrows” and “reads” from the Prime Lending Library and Kindle Unlimited after 10% of the book was read. The amount per “read” in June was $1.35. Amazon changed the program to “equalize” the field between shorter and longer works to pay on “Kindle Edition Normalized Pages” read. This was something many authors had been griping about, I didn’t really gripe because I really didn’t care and my one book that is enrolled in KDP Select is a relatively short one. Today when I looked at the report I saw a hefty drop in revenue and calculated the KENP rate to be…

$0.005779 cents per page

Wow.

Not even a full penny per page. Slightly more than half a cent. I had figured that WORST case scenario I’d see an 80% decrease… but it’s actually WORSE than my WORST case scenario at 87%.

And that’s with $11,000,000 in the fund? Is this what I get for not caring?

Dang.

Doom on me.

Honestly I’m not sure which way to go. Do I pull my other two books from the other stores (where they really don’t get much traction) and enroll them in KDP Select in the hopes of getting back SOMETHING close to what I had been getting… or do I just pull out of KDP Select altogether? Should I do a marketing campaign (which I haven’t done in awhile) or let them continue along organically? What will the next change bring? Are the other platforms viable at all? I don’t have answers to those questions… but please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments.

The only thing I’m sure of… I need to write more books.

Includes #26 BONUS: Avoid Social Networking Pitfalls

Although Social Media adoption and use continues to spread like wildfire grabbing headlines on news sites around the world it is important to remember that we are still medical professionals. It’s really no secret that I’ve spent a lot of my time over the past 5 years blogging about Social Media and EMS at TheSocialMedic.net, cofounded PIOSocialMediaTraining.com to help agencies of all types adopt Social Media in an effort to get their message out, and have even spoken on it at conferences.

Yet, time and time again we read and hear about issues with Medics using Social Media inappropriately, and this can be an absolute career ender. This bonus chapter includes 7 Things To Do Online That Will End Your Career and 7 Things To Do Online To Build Your Career, because not ALL Social Media is bad. It’s important to know and understand our place in this new medium while always remembering that our primary role is that of providing care for the patient you’ve been called for.

New Edition… New Formats

Kobo

For those of you wondering, yes 25 Things They Should Have Taught You In Medic School… But Didn’t 2nd Edition is on Kobo as well. I’m not quite sure how Kobo updates their titles, but the new edition is indeed live and kicking.

iBooks

I’m also happy to announce that 25 Things They Should Have Taught You In Medic School… But Didn’t 2nd Edition is now in the iBooks store! That’s right… after a grueling process I am now finally available to ALL the iPad readers in the world!!!

That’s all exciting stuff, right? Well… there’s just one more thing…

25 Things They Should Have Taught You In Medic School… But Didn’t 2nd Edition is in PRINT

3D_Transparent_BackgroundThat’s right… it’s true… now you have NO excuse not to get a copy because 25 Things They Should Have Taught You In Medic School… But Didn’t 2nd Edition is in PRINT available through Amazon, Createspace, and other fine book sellers in most countries.

I have to be honest, when I first wrote this book I figured it would do really well as an ebook but only an ebook. I was surprised to hear how many people wanted an actual physical copy for themselves AND their students. I even had one instructor tell me he wanted to send them out to people BEFORE they started class so that when they actually did show up, it was with eyes wide open. So, along with the new content, a fresh edit, and a shiny new cover it is now something you can tote around with you

25 Things They Should Have Taught You In Medic School… But Didn’t – Going to school to become an Emergency Medical Technician or and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic can often seem like a long and arduous process. Unfortunately, not everything that should be taught is taught. While reasons may vary from class to class, there are important aspects that just don’t get the amount of time they deserve. This book looks to address some of the things that just can’t be covered in class, but really should be. The book includes 25 chapters on things every Medic, whether just thinking about signing up for class or graduated way back when, needs to know.
Regularly $2.99; On Sale For $.99 at Amazon for Kindle
and Kobobooks.com for Kobo

ems blogging e-book cover300The Official Guide To Blogging For EMS – One of the biggest challenges facing the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is being able to communicate with the public about what EMS is and what we can or cannot do. For years we have relied heavily on the media to help educate the public about our services. Sometimes they got it right, but most times there were half-truths or missing facts in the story.

Now media itself is seemingly under the gun. Whereas newsrooms used to have hundreds of employees, their staffing is being reduced as print circulation, radio listening, and television views are being replaced by online publications, podcasts, and online video. If they weren’t able to accurately tell our story when they were at full staff, what makes us think that they can tell it now with their own manpower shortages?

Communicating with and educating the public about EMS is something that we need to accept and own ourselves. We need to tell our own story, to communicate our own value, and place ourselves in the minds of the public as we want to be seen. Blogging can help us achieve all that, and more.

King’s Joyland Will Be Paper Only… For Now

June 4, 2013 By Dave Konig Leave a Comment

In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Stephen King is quoted as saying:

“I have no plans for a digital version,” Mr. King said. “Maybe at some point, but in the meantime, let people stir their sticks and go to an actual bookstore rather than a digital one.”

joylandI find King‘s decision on not releasing a digital version pretty interesting for a few reasons. First, he was (is?) one of the ebook pioneers and advocates. His novella Riding The Bullet was one of the first exclusively digital ebooks out there. With over 400,000 downloads the first day. It is possible there might have been more, but problems with the DRM encryption caused user’s computers to crash from early on giving it a double black eye when coupled with the actual servers selling the ebook being down.

The second thing I find interesting is that he has chosen this novel to do this experiment with, as opposed to his upcoming sequel to The Shining called Doctor Sleep: A Novel.

The final thing that I find interesting about it is that he talks about people going to an actual bookstore rather than a digital one… but the book is still being sold on Amazon: Joyland (Hard Case Crime).

So how does this promote local bookstores again?

Yeah, it doesn’t. I think that’s a line to throw out, and a garbage one at that, in order to keep the rights and possibly capitalize on the profits from digital editions later on through self-publishing. Considering that 50 Shades of Grey author E.L. James was reported to earn 25% per $9.99 ebook copy, if she sold 1,000,000 ebooks that would have come to $250,000. Had she kept those digital rights and had sold the book for the same price at the 70% author rate, she would have learned $700,000. That’s a $450,000 difference!

So this does nothing for bookstores, and it does nothing for fans. It just means people who want to read it now have to lug it around, possibly forget it at home and have no way of reading it, have it collect dust on a bookshelf somewhere once they are done, and have the satisfaction of contributing to the demise of the rainforest in THE Amazon.

I won’t be one of those people.

Of this I can assure you.
