With Christmas finally past and over, I think it is safe to talk about this without worrying about causing a riot at Target.
Cookies have been a part of holiday traditions for centuries. One of the traditions involves leaving a plate of them (along with a few carrots for the reindeer/mule) out for Santa Claus. While the tradition can possibly be traced back to Norse mythology (when children would leave hay out for Odin‘s horse Sleipnir) during the Yuletide celebration, it rooted itself firmly in the Germanic observance of St. Nicholas, a way to leave treats for people who have travelled over long distances. St. Nicholas himself over time morphed into Santa Claus. The tradition continued unabated and in fact was assisted with the help of Coca-Cola (who substituted a glass of milk for their own product) and their development of the modern icon.
Over the last few years Oreo has really stepped up their game when it comes to variety and flavors. There have been some definite hits (S’Mores anyone?) in their experimentation, and some that could become the literal definition for an acute severe miss (Peppermint served NEVER).
Allow me to reveal to you THE cookie that was on Santa‘s own list (whether he knew it or not) this year…
That’s right… the GINGERBREAD OREO.
Forget Cotton Candy, this flavor was SUPERB. The essence of the gingerbread morphed into a tiny delectable masterfully baked Oreo is the absolute embodiment of gingerbread perfection. Forget your houses. Forget your trees. Gingerbread Oreos are by far the best gingerbread in the land. There was just one small problem…
… they were exclusive to Target. It is a little maddening that the best cookie of the season was only available at the most untrusted retailer in the country (data breach 2013), but such is the way of corporate cookie mongering America.
So there you have it… this was the cookie every Santa wanted… but only those brave enough to get their data breached received. Hopefully next year Oreo will make Gingerbread Oreos more widely available and will let Peppermint Oreos fall into the Abyss of Cookie Doom.
