Today is February 2! Do you know what that means? Today is Groundhog’s Day!!!
This morning at 7:25am Punxsutawney Phil, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, has prognosticated for the 130th time and says there will be an EARLY SPRING!!! In Groundhogese… NO SHADOW!!!
I love Groundhog’s Day… it’s by far my favorite holiday of the year. I continue to be overjoyed at the lack of commercialism. I adore the world believing in the magical prognostic powers of a rodent. I love the fact that there are little to no expectations on Ground Hog’s Day.
Naturally we all have expectations. We have expectations about events, how much we will enjoy it and what might happen. We have expectations of people, how they will behave towards us and what they may do given a certain circumstance. We have expectations about holidays, where events and people tend to merge together doubling our mental and emotional investment.
Without having that expectation to begin with there is rarely that deep haunting disappointment when our expectations are not met. Disappointment does nothing but cut away at whatever humanity we may have left within us. Sure, it can be a bit disappointing when we hear that there’s going to be 6 more weeks of winter, but that’s a whole lot less disappointing than finding out you didn’t even get ONE number right in Powerball (amongst other disappointments from events, people, and holidays)!
I love Groundhog’s Day because it has honestly never disappointed me… even if it means I have six more weeks of winter… which this year is NOT the case!!!
Of course… I’m just the messenger… don’t link to me when a blizzard hits next week… k?
