There are moments when I really really really just want to be a jerk. In those moments it takes a really true conscious effort NOT to be a jerk… even though the temptation of jerkdom is an incredibly powerful purely intoxicating seduction of the mind and soul.
Take parking a car for example. Parking spots are a premium, especially in the city. There are a lot of places where you can comfortably fit two cars inbetween two driveways… but then someone parks in such a way that only THEIR car fits.
Now they can do this for any number of reasons. They could just be bad parkers… or they are jerks. Yeah, so it’s only two reasons… but you get the idea. People who have just been a jerk for no reason other than a disregard for others feelings, situation, and most importantly how many shopping bags they have in the back of their car.
Unfortunately, usually by the time I get home I need to park in what is comparatively Guam from my front door. So yeah, people who park like jerks really really really irritate me. Last night I actually made it home in time to park a bit closer and was afforded that opportunity to be THAT jerk. Yet… I didn’t. Heck, I didn’t park in the space because there was no way to fit in it WITHOUT being THAT jerk. So I didn’t… and I parked in Guam.
Because sure enough, there were at least three other people who WERE those jerks. I get the temptation, really, I do… but why? Why be a jerk when if you just take a moment to think about how you’re parking and how it affects all the other cars around you then you’ll realize you’re about to be a jerk. The same goes for saying stuff or doing stuff on an everyday basis… avoiding becoming a parking jerk is not all that different from just avoiding being a jerk in general.
Ya know what would really be nice?
If the people who I made a conscious effort NOT to be a jerk to would have the courtesy to make that same effort. What do you think the chances are of that happening?
Yeah, not likely. Lest my faith, or lack thereof, in humanity remains unchanged.
And no… this isn’t really about parking… but it felt good to get this minor rant out… really good in fact.
And yes… if you think I might be talking about you… then I definitely am.
And absolutely… I just totally gave in to the temptation of BEING A JERK on the line right before this one.
Don’t be a jerk.
