Oklahoma Highway Patrol Releases Full Dashcam From Trooper Martin

As advised by the Okfuskee County District Attorney Max Cook, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has released the full version of the dashcam video from Trooper Martin’s cruiser in regards to the incident that took place on May 24, 2009 with the Creek Nation EMS ambulance crew.

Here are some more quick observations in addition to the ones I made about the initial clip when it was released:

  • Trooper Martin was on the scene for his supposed “emergency” call literally 20 seconds and amazingly there is little to no audio
  • In the video he clearly tells the ambulance crew, “You’re not on an emergency!” This is probably due to his lack of understanding that not ALL emergencies need to be run with lights and sirens, which truth be told is the same misunderstanding that a lot of EMS providers also have
  • The Paramedic clearly explains to him that they have a patient and asks that he be arrested at the hospital before any physical confrontation
  • The Trooper came out of his patrol car yelling and apparently enraged
  • At 14:01:47 the audio from the Trooper’s microphone cuts out. The last sound you hear appears to be Paramedic White being slammed into the side of the ambulance by the Trooper

It is nice to finally see the same level of transparency from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol that Creek Nation EMS exhibited from day zero. While I think this video is evidence enough to have Trooper Martin at the very least retrained if not have his badge taken away, the real question that still remains is did Paramedic White do the right thing by resisting the attempt to place him under arrest?

More importantly what, if any, lessons have law enforcement agencies learned from this incident? What about EMS agencies?
