NBC's Trauma

Derek Luke in TraumaWhen NBC announced their partial lineup for the 2009-2010 season, they listed a new drama called Trauma based on the Paramedics of San Francisco. Unlike Saved, it looks to be an action oriented drama with helicopters crashing and tankers burning.

Unfortunately, even before the show has debuted there are questions regarding the authenticity of its portrayal. There have been rumors about the show’s writers disregarding the expertise of the Paramedic and doctor consultants in regards to treatments, drugs administered, and the method in which this is done all in the name of “creativity”. So is this going to be another faulty portrayal of EMS?

While I realize that these are only rumors, the fact that in the promo shots (where there is obviously a burning tanker) Derek Luke is seen wearing latex (latex free plastic?) gloves and obviously from the smoke working downwind from the accident. While it is true you don’t always have the upwind/downwind to choose from… I don’t know about you… but the last car fire I was on I wore my work gloves because the latex can melt to my hands and that would make me useless to the patients since then I myself would be a victim.

While we can hope that this is a bigger draw than the grittier drama that preceded it, it’s still a summer away. Hopefully they’ll take that extra time to make it as authentic as possible.
